l ENROLL A CHILD l
How Do Kids Get Involved?
Big Brothers Big Sisters
matches children ages 6-14, who reside in Cedar Rapids and
parts of east central Iowa. Children who are accepted into
the program simply exhibit a need for a positive adult role
model and are living in a single parent home. Not every
child from a single-parent home needs a Big Brother or Big
Sister. Many can rely on the support of other family
members. But in cases where a caring adult is needed and
requested, Big Brothers Big Sisters can provide friendship
and support. How Are Adult Volunteers Screened? The
volunteer to be matched with your child will be assessed in
these ways prior to any match: * Orientation * Complete
written application with five personal references. * Check past ten years of traffic
and criminal records, and the child abuse registry. * Case manager
assesses motivation, family and work history during first interview.
* Applicant completes personality profile. * Case manager visits
applicant's home for a second interview. * After completion of
interviews, traffic and criminal histories and references, agency
staff determines a volunteer's suitability. * Notification letter
sent to volunteer and volunteer's employer.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is recognized
nationally for its screening and training of volunteers. The
professional staff works carefully to ensure only the most appropriate
volunteers are accepted for program participation. Program Options
